Szechuan and Thai food: the Holy Grail

David Bresch | Aug 7, 2005 09:37 AM

For me, the Holy Grails of ethnic food are Szechuan style Chinese and Thai. There is no good Thai in Philadelphia, in my opinion. I have found two places that serve decent Szechuan, both recommended here. Yesterday, we ate at Szechuan Tasty House at 9th and Arch. We made a tremendous effort to get their best dishes, since the take out I got there had been less than fabulous. The effort paid off. The hostess' English is excruciating but we ended up with excellent dishes in the end.

I forget the other place but it is older, right opposite Rising Tide. On the down side its smell and decor are poor. On the up side, it serves very good Szechuan and Taiwanese food. These two are the only ones in Philly I would recommend for Szechuan. If you feel any better knowing, I think I only had good Thai in Manhattan once, the best Thai is in the burroughs.
