I haven't had Swiss food in a long time. I remember a place (back in the day) called The Broker on Capitol Hill that was serious and very good. But it just so happens I ate at both of the area's Swiss restaurants this past week - unless there are others I don't know about.
The Swiss Bakery, just outside the Beltway off Braddock Rd, is a roaring success. It has found its customer base, and eveything from the decor to the market to the food and the breads is a picture of Swiss charm. I had a very dark bread and also a cheese bread, and both are compelling. In addition, there are tables and counter service for folks who want breakfast or lunch.
The food is intriguing, though not always as delightfiul as the breads, pies, and pastries. The spaetzle and the split pea soup were very tasty but also very salty. The quiche is too foamy for me. The raclette is simple but well executed: potatoes, cornichons, and pearl onions with copious melted cheese scraped onto the plate. The cheese has a nice, distinct flavor. Also served with some thin slices of a kind of ham, it's a real treat. On the sweet side, the St Moritz pie, packed tight with multiple nuts, is a winner.
Stable is right across from the Atlas Performing Arts Center. and has a Swiss flag prominently displayed out front. We had two main courses: the first was called Stable roesti, a large casserole of shredded potatoes topped with cheese, seasoned tomato, and thin ham. This was a true Chowhound delight and a MUST order. The other dish was venison served with spaetzle, red cabbage, and candied chestnuts. The sides were stellar, but the venison was not.
I woud return to both gladly.
