Sweet Potato Pie Question

I have never made a sweet potato pie nor have I eaten one (yuck) but soon I am going to need to bake a few for a church program. Question: after you cook and mash the sweet potatoes, do you pass them through a sieve or not? Seems to me that the mashed sweet potato would not be perfectly smooth and creamy but maybe a bit fibrous. Also, I would not say NO to anybody's good sweet potato pie recipe; thanks in advance.
