I can't believe I haven't yet posted about the place I visit every single weekday morning here...yet.
On the corner of Barrow and York streets, from 7:30 to at least 9:30 every morning, an unusual pushcart takes the curb. Run by Leila Haddad, an ex-WFMU dj who went to culinary school in NYC. She had graduated right after sept. 11 and couldn't get a job--so she decided she'd share her skills with her neighbors in a shoestring operation.
Anyway, every morning she has different things--she likes to experiment, and nearly everything is GREAT. cream scones with cherries, portuguese coconut 'pudding', brazilian cheese-puffs, zucchini/apricot bread, homemade empanadas, amazing homemade mushroom quiche, apple/pear galettes, greek wedding cookies, etc. etc. etc. The only thing she sells that she doesn't make herself, at home, are bagels.
admittedly, I'm there all the time so I'm a little biased. But I wouldn't be visiting her every morning if her work wasn't sublime. She just started supplying Madame Claude's with some of their pastry as well.
