Bittersweet announcement: The Sweet Booth owner is retiring in late October, 2021, after 28 years in the boba business. The Sweet Booth is in the heart of Oakland’s Chinatown, a small service counter shop tucked in the Pacific Renaissance Plaza. They make my favorite milk tea and taro boba in the Bay Area. Back before boba shops became trendy and popped up everywhere, I was so happy to discover this modest little sweet shop that offered a variety of boba, smoothies, juices, ice cream, and milk shakes.

I had the pleasure of meeting the husband-and-wife team, Calvin and Hetty, and they are very welcoming, generous, and hard working. Calvin takes great care and attention to detail on all his drinks. He firmly believes in using the freshest ingredients, you won’t find any powder mixing in this boba shop. The Sweet Booth has an old-school charm to it, with a fast-food table seating, and menu written in Chinese and English on upper cabinets above the counter. The milk tea is made with a blend of 4 types of tea leaves, strong and not overly sweet. The smoothies are made to order with fresh cut fruits. My go-to Sweet Booth order is the taro boba, which is made with real taro, sago, and house made boba.

My go-to drinks are HK milk tea, Thai iced tea, taro boba, mango boba, watermelon boba, and red bean ice (no boba on that one)
