Swedish Meatball Ragu Hot Wrap at Pret a Manger - Report

Dave MP | Dec 15, 2009 03:56 PM

I have eaten at Pret quite a few times since moving to England, but tonight was my first time trying one of their hot wrap sandwiches. I had the Swedish meatball ragu, and I was very pleasantly surprised.

I was expecting a filling that resembled (taste-wise) other Swedish meatballs I've had before - for example, the ones at Ikea. But more than anything, this sandwich reminded me of an Italian meatball sub, similar to what I'd get in Boston or New York.

The tortilla wrap was very hot when I got it, so perhaps mine was so good because it had been very freshly made. Who knows. Inside the wrap were three (or four?) meatballs - the seasoning reminded me of Italian style meatballs. There was also some cheese (a perfect melty consistency, mild flavor which reminded me of provolone, although it probably wasn't). Finally, there were a few slivers of red onion, and a perfect amount (not too much, not too little) of a sweet tomato sauce. The sauce was almost like a mixture of sweet ketsup and thick, sweet marinara sauce - the kind you'd get with fried mozzarella sticks at a late-night pizza place in Boston suburbs.

So, to sum it all up, I really liked it! I'm curious to hear if anyone else has any thoughts on this sandwich.....are the flavors specifically appealing to my American palate? Or does it have more universal appeal?

Also, are there other good places in London for meatball sandwiches?
