Swathi Tiffins in Sunnyvale: Terrible Restaurant Name but Good South Indian Food

Face it - could a restaurant have a worse name than Swathi Tiffins?

It's hard to get more bare bones than this place. The tables all have plastic over them like a grandmother's sofa, and there's nothing on the walls except for two TV sets showing Bollywood movies. Next door is a deserted Indian grocery that opens directly into the restaurant. However, it's apparently pretty popular. When I arrived at 1:45 p.m. only one table was open. It feels like a super authentic place - everyone other than me appeared to be Indian, and there was a language barrier when ordering.

I ordered the regular combo which included a choice of dosa (I got the masala dosa), a choice of rice (I got the coconut rice but the veggie biryani was mighty tempting), sambar, raita, and two sauces I never quite identified. All for $5.50.

My masala dosa was quite good, and tasted quite a bit like the one I had at Saravan Bhavan. The filling at both places was unfortunately a little on the creamy side (I prefer it slighly less so, like at Vik's). The coconut rice was good but not amazing (GBNA) and full of seeds and nuts.

I wasn't very fond of the sambar - again, like at nearby Annapurna much too sweet. (Could it be that Swathi specializes in Gujarati cuisine which is sweeter?) However, the raita was perfection; it was wonderfully flavorful and full of small pieces of cucumber and carrot. I dipped pieces of my dosa that weren't saturated with potato into it.

The location is on one of the streets that connect the Lawrence and Central Expressways.
