Was having a massive craving for tempura this week, and knowing that my signif other at home is not as big of a tempura fan as I am, I figured I could treat myself to a Friday lunch of it. Hard part of that is that I work in Hillside, and while you can get some great hot dogs and beef sandwiches around, not many choices in a lunch timeframe for Japanese food.
I've passed the Sushi Inn on my way home several times, so I decide to try what they had to offer. I ordered the lunch special Shrimp Tempura and a California Roll. Took about 10 minutes from the time I ordered until they handed me my bag (again, lunch timeframe, I had to do carry out). I was pleasingly surprised when they brought me a glass of water as I waited for my food and watched my roll being made.
While the crispyiness of the tempura survived the 10 minute drive back to my padded work cell, I wasn't very impressed by the tempura. I prefer a very light batter, and this was not (actually slightly reminded me of Long John Silver's shrimp, same color and consistancy to the batter but FAR LESS greasy). 3 shrimp and pieces of onion, green pepper, potato, sweet potato, eggplant and zucchini, served with rice. The rice was very good, perfectly done sticky rice.
If the tempura only rated an "eh", the California roll pleased me enough to want to go back to this place. Perfectly balanced, and was surprised at the addition of masago (smelt roe) as a standard to the roll, which made a very nice touch. For ordering carry out, they had the operation down well - a cup of their miso soup (also excellent), dipping sauces, chopsticks.
I would not make an effort to head out there as a "must try" place, but if you're stuck in the 'burbs and want some sushi, it's a pretty good place. Lunch special tempura was $7.50 and the roll was $4.95.
