Surviving Utah: Fry Sauce and Hires Big H in SLC

Finally! My last report… I know… I know… you guys were wondering… does she ever leave Utah?!! Well gosh tootin’ I do… and I leave it in STYLE by on my last day entering a hallowed hall of Fry Sauce…

I don’t remember when I first heard of Fry Sauce to be honest… might have been here on Chowhound… but being in the Food Business, I knew Utah was known for two things… Jello Molds and Fry Sauce… Not being a big jello fan, I skipped that search and thanks to last minute suggestions from the hounds, I found myself at Hires B H!

Located at the intersection of 700 and 400 S in Salt Lake City, we were leaving the university and making a gas stop when I spotted it… or should I say… smelled it… The heavy scent of fryer, the hint of grilling burgers, Sooo good… I knew this would be our Fry Sauce destiny…

When we stepped in, I was a bit surprised by the set up. Almost more like a casual serve restaurant than a fast food joint. The menu was also really large. It was while looking over the menu, that SO noticed an eldery man in a green apron by the door. He looked REALLY hard and asked me, “is that the owner?” I took a look at the back of the menu and was astounded… “I think it is…” He left shortly thereafter and one of the checkers called him Bob confirming our celebrity sighting… So, so far on this trip we’d seen Robert Redford, Wilmer Valderama (don’t ask…) and now BOB Hale!! I was expecting Donnie and Marie to walk in any second…

And so we placed our order… We got…

Chili: I was trying to be good since I really wasn’t all that hungry and not getting the burger… I instantly regretted it the instant I told the waitress Chili. I expected a cup, but what I got was actually a nice bowl. The chili also had excellent flavor. I was VERY happy with my choice.

Onion Rings: Medium in which to eat Fry Sauce… But even alone these were great, the batter was a hybrid batter/cornmeal that wasn’t too mealy. VERY good.

Big H: SO took one for the team and ordered the burger. Looked great, but when I took a bite, the processed meat patty really got to me… it had no texture and tasted slightly liverish… I was even happier I got the Chili.

To drink we both ordered the root beer which ROCKED. Best Fountain Root Beer I’ve ever had… SERIOUS. We were even tempted to buy their root beer extract, but when I saw the recipe involving dry ice, and KNOWING there as a dry ice facility near the house, I put it back… Dommy’s SO+Dry Ice+Root Beer= Bad… bad… explosively BAD idea.

And finally… FRY SAUCE!!!! A Dommy first!! And hopefully not a last! The pictures I’ve seen of it make it look almost pale, tartar sauce/thousand islandish… I was pleasantly surprised the live version defiantly had lots of red. Further, Hires has little tomato peels from the puree, COOL! The taste was great too… Not too sweet like ketchup, not too greasy or thick like Mayo. Slightly tangy but not too much (SO actually wished it was more tangy). On the way out, I was REALLY tempted to pick up a bottle… but I also put it back thinking In effort of not making any homemade fries…

And so, I survived Utah! And did pretty darn good too! Made it down a mountain without hitting a tree, didn’t get salmonella from Sushi, I even had a Conchita for breakfast to make forget about all that darn snow around me… And so, thanks again Southwest Board posters for the Fry Sauce Rec and your reponses to my other posts… I’ll slink back the L.A, board for a little bit, Until this summer when I make my next Southwest Visit to Vegas! Yup, it’s that time of year again (And yes, I’m going with the girls who dragged me to PF Changs last year!) but this trip should be epic, as it’s my Make SO Love Vegas trip!!” (He’ll probably be writing the whiney “So my old lady took me to vegas…” posts… ;)) and so lots of hounding will be had!! I can’t wait! :)
