Although I was in no mood for a burrito, I owed it to my husband to satisfy his craving since he slogged through an hour and a half of computer monitor shopping at one of those crazy loud electronic stores. His favorite al pastor burrito place is Taqueria San Jose on International (14th) off of Fruitvale in East Oakland. I like burritos too, I just wasn't in the mood.
On a whim, I decided to order the chile relleno, a la carta. It was really quite delicious. Big poblano pepper, filled with melty cheese, battered and fried. The batter was thick and eggy. It was topped with a tomato-onion broth. It was served with a litte chopped iceberg lettuce and tomato. This chile relleno was actually one of the best I've had in a long long time. And, only $2.50! Wow!
I also ordered a carnitas taco which was okay. It was covered with some saucy thing which I've never in my experience with carnitas have not ever experience. Nevertheless, the portion was quite generous.
Super burrito al pastor was as big as a house. He ate it all and thanked me kindly for giving in.
Total was around $11. Why don't I do this more often?
