Surprise Trip to New York

peppermint pate | Feb 1, 2005 08:32 AM

Just booked a spontaneous 3-day trip to NYC over Valentine's Day. We've not yet booked our hotel but I think we'll stay midtownish this time as we want to check out the Christo exhibit, Moma, etc. Can't wait.

There are a couple of "musts" on our list of return visits - Mary's Fish Camp, Russ and Daughters and Cafe Gitane for sure. I'd love your help with a few key meals:

February 14th - this day's a bit special for us as it's the day we got engaged last year (aw, I know, corny but true). Thought was to go to a cafe for lattes and croissants in the morning and then do a "big" special lunch. Willing to travel pretty much anywhere but would like one of the 2 meals to be within a 20 minute or so walk of Central Park as we'll be walking through the Christo installation that day and maybe also going ice skating.

Breakfast - maybe Balthazar or the Chelsea spot that people rave about for almond croissants. Other suggestions?

Lunch - open table shows a fair amount of availability, including db bistro moderne, Town, Eleven Madison Park. Are any of these special for lunch or other/better choices?

February 15th - would like to try somewhere new for dinner. Ideally, it would be a spot like Hearth or Gramercy or even Red Cat - great food, good vibe and casual attitude. A few we've been mulling over - Babbo, Lupa, Craft, Sumile. Other ideas?

Thanks for your help.
