I decided to check out the new Surfas today - even though it looked like there was still some working going on, the doors were open. According to the cashier I talked to they've been open since last Saturday, but it's clear they're still stocking the cases. The cafe isn't open yet, looks like it's got a way to go before they're in operation.
The new space really feels airer and larger, much better lay-out than previously. I'm a lousy judge of square footage, but it looked to me that they do have much more space especially for refrigerated/frozen items. It's all on one level and there's also more room for grocery carts (and my fellow shoppers were taking full advantage of that). The food is on the south side of the store, equipment to the north, but it's not absolute. Even if you're just shopping for some olives or tuna, you can dodge around a $14,500 mixer that could double as a jacuzzi.
They also have a section/room marked off as a demonstration kitchen.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what they stock when they've got these cases full, so far it seems very similar to what they had before (which is no bad thing!). It was pretty crowded at lunch today, I'd imagine weekends will be much more so. With more space however it won't feel as much like roller derby as it did before.
My favorite things today: the sea salt caramels from Little Flower Candy Co. and outside the cement walkways patterned with kitchen gear.
