what with he big headlines on the NE donut front being grabbed by the chain slugfest between dunkin and krispy, i decided that sunday was the time to support demet's in medford. on my stroll to mystic ave i sadly passed a dd's parking lot on broadway that was packed with people, but when i chanced upon little old demet's there was only a single patron in the place. undeterred by the sad implication that the chains will kill this classic shop quite dead, i bought a half dozen baked treats in hopes of helping them stave off the sometimes dreaded economies of scale.
and damn if their donuts aren't worth the trip. the old fashioneds had perfect texture and just the right hint of sweetness; the glazed jellys were soft and thinly glazed and had the ideal amount of filling surrounded by moist donut; and the blueberry cake donuts were everything they have been advertised as--filled with blueberry flavor, nice amount of sugar and a cakey texture that's to die for.
all in all, a great bag of treats bought at a joint that (to me) far surpasses the wares available at the big franchises. here's hoping they don't become a casualty of the donut wars.
