Superbowl Food - where to get Bollilos (in Oakland, please)?

Pssst | Feb 1, 2006 01:04 PM

Hey howdy,
I know there's been a mass gnashing of teeth on this board regarding the sad state of panaderias in the Bay Area in the past, but just thought I'd do a quick double-check in case something new has surfaced...Does anyone have a recommendation for a really good panaderia in the International Avenue area of Oakland where I can get tasty bollilos, conchas, pan dulce, tres leches cake, etc?

I'm putting together My-Mex treats (jicama-mango slaw, chipotle meatball subs, breakfast bollilos, tortas, various salsas & pico de gallos, etc) for a Superbowl party and I need a source for good Mexican-style bread.

Particularly I'm looking for info on: Panaderia El Pueblo, Panaderia La Favorita, Los Mexicanos, Pena's and Chapinlandia in Oakland.

I'll be over there Saturday afternoon on other business. But I'll be in a time crunch so I won't be able to trapse all over the Bay Area, nor will have time to visit every place on Int'l so getting advance intel would help alot.

FYI - Over the years, I've scoured the Mission in SF and never found any bakery with even vaguely decent goods so in the past when I've needed Mexican-style breads, I've generally just substituted similarly shaped French breads. Not authentic, but better in my book than using stale, crappy bread. But if anyone knows of a new source in SF, I'd love to hear about it.
