First visit to this local burger chain. It seems to get a lot of recs on this board, but very few actual write-ups.
We went with out of town guests: most had the mini (quarter pounder) burger. I had the super duper burger (half pound, two patties). Also had a vanilla shake and their home-made lemonade. One of our party had the daily special vegetarian, which they liked but I didn't taste.
The burger was extremely juicy: ordered at the recommended doneness. But the toppings were fairly non-descript. Home-made pickles were available and were tasty, but too chunky to be added to the burger, so were eaten on the side. Their much-vaunted 'super duper sauce' was barely detectable and did not enhance the burger substantially. The fries were thin and very good. My wife chose the garlic fries, which she loved but I felt were overpowering in flavour. The lemonade was overly sweet and not sour enough and I wouldn't order again. The shake (made with Strauss ice-cream) was fine, but call me a heathen, I actually prefer the Shake-shack shakes.
For our portion of the bill (five burgers: three of them the mini, only two orders of fries and only the two drinks), it came to nearly $70 including tax and tip, which is pricey for what it was: a fast-food joint. Yes, it's better than in and out, but it's also twice the price and as much as I enjoyed the patty, I wasn't blown away. Yes, I've had much more expensive (and worse quality) burgers at sit-down restaurants, but given the space and vibe of the place (looks like a five guys, with no peanut shells on the floor), it won't be a regular place on our rotation. Having said that, I would like to go again and ask for 'extra sauce' in case that really does elevate the eating to substantially a notch above.
