Sunday Crepes @ Laurel Street Café (San Carlos)

Melanie Wong | May 5, 200711:58 PM

In January, my after-ZAP brunching found me in San Carlos with a couple of chowpals at Laurel Street Cafe. My first time here, the very Gallic vibe of the place reached out and touched me from the moment I got out of the car and spotted the happy patrons sitting outside. Stepping into the long and narrow interior, I was greeted with a cheery “bonjour” from more than one of the staffers. Family-run, even grandpa visiting from France was helping out with beverage service.

A chicken and mushroom number was one of the day’s special crepes, and a delicious introduction to the budget-priced French fare here. Spread so thin, the chewy buckwheat crepe might not be as photogenic as some, but it delivered on every measure of flavor. The squiggle of grain mustard sauce added a nice tang, and the carrot flan topper was particularly rich and delectable. Some lightly dressed springy greens on the side balanced out the plate.

Not flamed, my crepe suzette for dessert had its full measure of Grand Marnier swirled with the butter and sugar and filling. Eggy and tender as can be, the dessert crepe was adorned with a thick whipped cream rosette and scoop of Ciao Bella vanilla gelato.
