our summer weekend - Philly

I can't really call this report "dining" since most of our eating is in casual places where we don't have to get dressed up. Except for very special occasions, my husband objects to having to wear a tie and/or jacket. But of course, we want good food.

Friday evening: Nan. We were with a group of six people, and everyone loved what they had. Several had the cold cucumber soup, which is marvelous. For a change, I started with the spinach salad, which was excellent. I've talked about their entrees in previous posts, so I won't elaborate, but we were all happy campers. And Flo has been making a strawberry-rhubarb tart for dessert - I hope she keeps it on the menu. BYOB.

Saturday evening: August. We really love this place. The menu is small, and everything they do, they do well. We like the ambience, too - cozy, friendly, excellent service.
Whether it's fish, meat, poultry, or pasta - it's always good. Some people had the lamb "pop" special and loved it. I resisted the talapia (I love their preparation, over scallion risotto) and had a pasta, crabmeat and sun-dried tomatoes over penne. My husband also loves the way they do their pasta bolognese.
They had my favorite homemade pie: coconut custard. It's not even my favorite flavor usually, but there is something about the way they make it that I can't resist. The others had the coffee over ice cream (I forget the name), which is good and refreshing.
BYOB. Cash only.

Sunday evening: Radicchio. Usually, we love it here. The grilled fish can't be beat. But this time a couple of people ordered pasta dishes, and were disappointed. The pasta itself was fine, but the bolognese sauce was salty and had very little meat.
I was happy because my grilled octopus appetizer was outstanding: tender, succulent, crispy grilled edges. And my grilled Dover sole was sweet and delicious as always.
Ice cream was our very good dessert; if it's not from Capogiro, then it's from someplace similar.
To their credit, our waiter and the manager listened to our complaints about the pasta dishes and took one entree off the bill.
We won't stop going there, but we'll stick to the fish and meat. (I have had the filet special, and it was as good as you'd want.) BYOB. No reservations.

For the person who requested "laid back" - all of these places fit the bill.
