Sumika, Los Altos report w/ pics

I've been wanting to eat at Sumika forever and finally tried it for dinner Sat 3/22/08. I made a list of all the dishes I read about to try. Everything was ok, but since I did a crappy job of ordering I'll have to go back to try more items.

This is a place for small plates of skewered food w/ some rice dishes & even a dessert menu. I did a crazy chicken theme for some strange reason.

momo (thigh) - some chunks of boneless thigh meat on a stick. $3.3 a stick. Yikes. It was tender and juicy. Little bit of salt taste. Pretty good.

Teba (chicken wing) - 2 pcs per order @ $4.30. Yikes expensive. They were fine, but still just chicken wings.

tsukune (chicken meatball). One strange looking chicken meatball on a stick w/ goopy sauce. $3.5 each. It was fine, but sauce was best.

hatsu (chicken heart) - taste like chicken. 4 pcs on a stick. Just ok. $3 a stick.

kawa (chicken skin) - I don't normally eat chicken skin. It was chewy & strange. Don't recommend at all. $3.80 per stick.

ochazuke (rice dish w/ chicken broth) - it was placed in a big bowl but the portion wasn't that big. rice w/ nori, lots of shaved bonito, some scallions, pickled plum, some wasabi on the side, and a teapot of chicken stock. Didn't notice the chicken stock in a teapot until too late - Wish the waitress mentioned it! Nice dish. $6 per bowl.

kara age (fried chicken) - I didn't try it, hubby & mom liked it ok. They said it was juicy dark meat. Tiny slice of lemon & pepper on the side. $7 per order.

Ask for the Dessert menu. I really enjoyed their famous Frozen Custard Pudding $5. Small chunks of custard cut up into cubes, tasted like ice-cream flan w/ a crisp burnt caramel topping w/ squirt of whipped cream & 2 blueberries & a sprig of mint on top. Yummy.

Our bill was $79.40 subtotal with $6.55 tax = $85.95 Before tip!

Dishes I'll try next time: Sumika salad $9.5; Oyako-don; Tea panna cotta (dessert) $5; Agedashi Tofu; Japanese Roasted Beef with garlic sauce.

Credit cards taken. Bathrooms in the back after you exit a door..women's single toilet/sink on the right.

Location: In downtown Los Altos, behind Starbuck's.
