Substitute for shortening in pound cake

When i looked up 'substitute for shortening' it said butter or margarine but i have tried that in a different recipe and it did not turn out right. But all recipes are different so i was wondering if it would work. So if you know please help and tell me if i should use butter or margarine or something that would taste better in pound cake, before i make it so it doesn't turn out wrong.
