Suba - what is all the fuss about?

I visited Suba recently and was so disappointed. After reading all of the raves about it here, I expected it to be amazing.

First of all, we had an 8:30 reservation on a Sat night and got there 20 mins early to have a drink at the bar, which we love to do. Even after telling them this, they kept pressuring us to sit early. After approaching us 3 times at the bar in 15 minutes, we took our drinks downstairs.

Good things - I did like the design and our waitress was great as was the service overall, with the exception of the hostess, and our apps - the sardine dish was fantastic and the ceviche was pretty good, although a little too acidic.

But the entrees were duds, and I believe that with how fast everything came out and that the plates were very hot upon arival, that the kitchen cooks the dishes and then keeps them hot until you're ready. We finished our apps in reasonable time, and they entrees came out just as they had been cleared. I think it is also why my salmon, ordered very rare, came out medium well, which I really don't like.

My boyfriend had the lamb, which was very tender, but the whole dish was not so flavorful, as was the salmon.

I will say that the deserts were pretty good - I had the almond cake dish and it was fantastic. But again, one of our deserts came out on a cold plate, which makes me think that this is prepared en masse and then served.

All and all, okay, but not quite worth it all the fuss people are making over it. I wouldn't bother unless I were just going for drinks and tapas.
