Having decided to go to a steak dinner to celebrate a friends birthday, we decided on Striphouse. The posts on this board indicated some positive feedback and so we thought it was worth a shot (plus- we had all been to the big names for corp/client events and wanted to go somewhere new).

One in our party had gone about 2 weeks ago and related a troubling story about their service, but we figured it was an anomaly. We were wrong.

The Service: I mention this first because it was lacking. First, we arrived for a 9 o’clock reservation just before 9 and were told our table would be ready shortly and we should take a seat at the already jam crowded bar. As one in our party went to check our coats, he overheard the hostess talking with someone who had 8:30 reservations, their table would be ready in 20 min he was told. We asked how long our wait would be and this is when they told us it would be 40 minutes. They should have told us this when we first arrived. We were seated an hour later. (it was Friday night- and we expected a wait-- but an hour seemed extreme, especially since we were told we would be seated shortly when we arrived).

The service continued to be quite poor (I had to go searching for the sommelier after requesting his assistance twice). Also, several items that we ordered never arrived, and our waiter was often no where to be found.

The food:
For an appetizer the majority of us had the bibb salad- with stilton dressing- tom-onion and bacon. The salad was very well done- the presentation was also very nice (the leaves were stacked one a top another). The dressing was rich and smooth-- not too thick. My only gripe was the small amount of bacon on each plate (you can never have enough bacon!)

For the main each couple in our party took the porterhouse for two. The quality of the meat was mediocre, and the service (table side) was a bit sloppy. Not the best steak I've had -- and the steak sauce (which I resorted to using) did not help things either.

The sides were hit and miss. The crisp goose fat potatoes that I had been looking forward to all week (thank you menupages) were a supreme disappointment-- tasteless and oily. however, the creamed spinach with truffles was out of this world (we had 2 orders). Additionally the french fries were very good.

For desert we shared 2 plates-- the only one I remember had caramelized bananas and was very good-- although the dough underneath was store bought and tasteless. But if you just ate the fruit- it was a great experience.

Perhaps there was a better cut of beef which we could have ordered which would have made this a better experience?
