Strip House

Had dinner the other night at Strip House (formerly Asti) at 13 E 12. The food at this new steak place was very good. I hear the restaurant is named after a cut of meat rather than the other meaning of strip (though the latter does make some appearances in the décor). Our appetizer, listed as being "for the table," was a torchon(sp?) of foie gras. This was a rich, smooth pate and there was ample for three people. The strip steak was tender, juicy and nicely seasoned. I also tasted the broiled porterhouse and lamb (included three cuts of lamb) and all were well prepared and flavorsome. Potatoes cooked in goose fat (the best way to cook potatoes!), creamed spinach (maybe a little on the salty side), and stewed red and yellow tomatoes complemented the main courses well. Hazelnut cake dessert was magnificent—neither too sweet nor too elaborate, just a great combination of ice cream, nuts, chocolate and pastry.

We were generally well looked after though service had some downs; for example we were given the wine list and seemed to wait a long time before the menus arrived. No doubt these minor problems will be ironed out. The most important thing was that the meal was really good and I look forward to returning.
