Stong new Thai/Sushi

scout | Jun 12, 2006 11:24 AM

84th & 3rd Ave in Bay Ridge, goes by the easy-to-remember if unoriginal name Bangkok Tokyo. Tho always suspicious of combined cuisines, this one turns out to be really good on both counts. It's in a spot previously occupied by an awful (and depressing) sushi bar, tho no resemblence to former owner.
On Thai front, the larb and curry were top notch. Larb had loads of flavor and spice/heat; green curry wasn't oily in the least, which is always a risk. Beef salad had all the right ingredients tho no heat, which they later explained is designed for local tastes but could certainly make hotter on request.
Wife liked the noodles with shrimp a lot, but that wasn't something i'd have ordered and i'd probably pass again even though i ate plenty of it.
Sushi was the bigger surprise: fresh, big slabs and pretty good selection. Tried three different rolls and liked all, tho i think these are genally a matter of personal preference/taste given the ridiculous range of combinations available these days.
Thai food on the pricier side, tho portions were big and all the oft-overlooked herbs etc. were in there; sushi was cheap by current standards(another reason we were surprised by its quality). Owners are super nice. Hope the place gets the business it desereves: my fear is that its spare, sleek decor -- a welcome departure from the neighborhood norm -- isn't "classy" enough for local tastes.
Sidenote: I know lots of posters think Nouvelle is best sushi spot in bay ridge, but while we thought the cooked stuff there was quite good, we were pretty disappointed with the sushi -- bland, didn't seem particularly fresh etc. -- and all of it seemed overpriced.
