After an abortive quest for fava beans to bring to a spring-themed dinner party the other day, I changed gears and went into the Stolichnaya Bakery at Fairfax and Santa Monica Blvd for the first time. I got a corn rye, a couple of black and whites, a couple of elephant ears, and a couple of chocolate cone/flaky/overgrown pastry thingies...
I was inspired because one of the dinner guests is a NYC transplant and we have often reminisced over East Coast delicacies rarely found out here... These pastries seemed to fit the bill. Black and white cookies: Eh. Not great, not terrible. I don't remember if I have ever had a black and white cookie that was out of this world, or if it is my petit madeline of childhood visits to my grandmother. I think the icing on this one was too thick. The elephant ears were really good, as were the other chocolatey thingies. The rye was a little dry, but has been delicious toasted for a week following.
In related news, I gotta get to Langer's. And Sahag's. And Phillipe's. All sandwich Chow-Saturday sometime? Are the downtown two open on the weekend?
