Stockholm: Restaurang Kryp In

Lunch in Gamla Stan is already iffy because of the heavy tourist presence. Add in a Sunday visit and the complications go up. I'm thrilled to share news of a delicious Chow - worthy place: Restaurang Kryp In on Prastgatan, which parallels the central tourist street. (If your guide book directs you to the building on Prastgatan with the Viking rune set in the wall, you've come to the right corner)

This restaurant has about six tables outdoors on a platform flanking the main entrance along with a charming interior space. The postage stamp kitchen makes everything to order so be prepared for slow service. At least based on our meal of fish and shellfish stew, and the bread in the breadbasket, the results were worth the wait. The stew contained generous portions of salmon and some other white fish, crayfish, and baby shrimp along with potatoes, diced zucchini and carrots in a tomato accented broth with a nice jolt of lemon. This was served with a saffron aoili and some greens on top to be stirred throughout.

Excellent rustic white bread and raisin dense brown bread. But the surprise bread was the Ry-krisp. At least I think that's what it is called when I've seen packages in the US. Unfortunately, that version tastes like cardboard according to my limited experiece. This has a strong, appealing rye flavor.

On Sunday lunch, the menu is limited to three choices: the stew, roast reindeer meat, and veal meatballs, presumably what we call Swedish meatballs.

A happy find!
