Stella Doro - Old Saybrook

few | Oct 10, 2009 06:16 PM

We decided to have Italian tonight so opted for one of our favorite Fall/Winter spots - Stella Doro in Old Saybrook.

We went a bit early and sat down a little before 6 PM - the dining room was still quiet , but by the time we left about 7:45 the place was full.

I have been a big fan of Stella Doro and its dining room staff are some of the best in the area.

I ordered my standard fare there - Rigatoni Stella Doro - Rigatoni with oyster mushrooms and shrimp in a vodka pink sauce.

While the taste and presentation did not disappoint - I was disappointed by the lack of the wonderful oyster mushrooms that are trademark for the dish over the years and was only presented with 3 shrimp in the dish - a DEFINITE difference in composition than in past years.

My husband had a special - chilean sea bass and it also was wonderful .

They did not have one of the Chiantis on their wine list and at the end of the night some bus staff left the full tray he carried the coffee out on our table and we passed it to ourselves.....weird for that place - - new kid I guess

But we ordered 2 Tartuffos - they only had 1 and we were one of the early diners that evening - they only had 2 other dessert options - so we just split the Tartuffo - which was tasty enough

We will go back again - but hope they are ready for their fall/winter diners next time!!!

Our waiter there is always the best......
