Sad news that Peter Oliver is closing Steak Frites, to reopen a new upscale "destination" restaurant ar same location sometime in May. He cites demand for a more sophisticated wine list, valet parking, etc. Someone in house - where we ate tonight for last time - said the restaurant was designed to accommodate 300 covers of a Saturday night, but had lately been doing only 180.
I am dubious about the neighbourhood's (Mt Pleasant at Eglinton) ability to support a destination eatery, when nearby Centro, eg, is far from selling out, ditto other similar places.
Steak Frites had good food and wine at reasonable prices with affable service - no frills, but solid comfort and standards - no need to dress up. I will miss it.
Credit to Oliver: the staff tonight told me they would be relocated to another of his establishments. That builds loyalty.
