Star Market in Berkeley

Ascender | Nov 15, 2010 07:46 AM

A small family-owned grocery store on Claremont Avenue, between College and Ashby, Star Market has wonderful produce. Much of it is marked "Pesticide Free" because they buy from small local farms that can't afford to be certified organic. The wonderful thing is that it isn't a mob scene like Berkeley Bowl or Monterey Market. You can even open a store account, sign for purchases and pay your food bill once per month.

The butcher in back is a separate concession. They have excellent meat, air-dried local poultry and a small selection of fresh-caught fish. If you want "restaurant cuts" of aged beef, this is the place to go.

The grocery section is eclectic. They carry delicious locally-made preserves that are wonderful hostess gifts among a variety of artisan food products. The prices on pantry staples, however, are higher than at the chain stores.

Star Market supported Berkeley, feeding people on credit through the Great Depression. Stop by and support this locally owned family business. Easy street parking isn't even metered and you'll rarely have more than one person in front of you at the checkout.
