Stained Glass in Evanston

michael j. | Sep 30, 200202:56 PM

Having lurked here for months but contributed nothing, my guilt has overwhelmed me and I feel I should put in a little plug for the Stained Glass wine bar/bistro in Evanston (on Benson near the Davis St. El/Metra stop) which I visited again Friday. I've stopped by a number of times, and have enjoyed both the wine selection, the food and the service.

They offer maybe 30 wines by the glass and in flights, some of the more interesting ones I haven't been able to find at Sam's, though they sell them there by the bottle as well. And the staff is really well-trained and friendly enough to go ask if they can't remember something. I've been there a few times in the late afternoon when the staff is getting their tastes of the day, and their training seems incredibly thorough.

I've only had appetizers at the bar, but I've had thin, crisp pizza with proscuitto, juicy oxymoronically-huge shrimp, a pleasant little cheese platter and a trio of creme brulees, the vanilla and chocolate of which were excellent, with the sugar a pleasant bitter crunch, but the amaretto one falling flat flavor-wise. Sorry about the alliteration.

Anyway, hope this recommendation helps someone else like this board has helped me.
