Finally made it here, and by the time we had starters we were already regretting all the weeks we spent not having eaten here. Too often, we end up at places with buzz and rave reviews that are just okay and leave un-wowed, so we just don't rush out every time a new one is announced. Now we're pretty determined to eat our way through the menu here.
The first thing that really stands out is the warmth and enthusiasm of the staff, which is also expressed on the menu and every plate. Really? Schmalz as a spread for the bread, and gribenes on the menu? Surprising and delicious. The only wrong step here was serving the schmalz so ice cold it needed to sit out to thaw enough to have any taste or spreadability, but small quibble where the food is prepared with so much heart.
Everything we tasted was a big winner, no let down here, only layer upon layer of flavors, large serving sizes in a very comfortable, casual, rustic setting, I could not stop thanking our server (so warm and engaging, thanks Kenny!) and praising the chef.
We ordered two starters, taking them at their word about their being small plates. Don't believe it; the lobster mac and cheese (delicious even cold as leftovers) was enough for 4 or more, or for one to have as a Really Filling Entree. We took most of it home so we'd be able to eat our mains.. The octopus salad starter, also a "small plate", was meal sized as well, with perfectly tender grilled octopus, just a light, delicate char, and plenty of whole, roasted garlic cloves. By the time we finished it, and had our mac and cheese packed up to go, we were pretty satisfied already.
Mains were Banh Mi for my husband and the house ground, grass fed burger for me, 10 oz, of what I believe the chef said was brisket, short rib, and chuck.... it was big, moist not greasy perfectly cooked to order and delicious. I actually ate til I was uncomfortably full, something I haven't done in probably a decade or more, but I couldn't stand to leave any of the burger behind. It had a generous portion of pork belly on top, pimento cheese, and greaseless, crispy fries. The pickled zucchini that came with it was a very good counterpoint.
We don't normally eat desserts, but the dessert menu here is extremely tempting. Saving room for it presents a challenge.
Best thing to happen food wise in Huntington in ages, best burger in town. Modest check for what is being served up here.
