Twice within the past 2 weeks I've found myself at three p.m. on the west side, looking for somewhere to have a late lunch or early dinner before catching a flight out of LAX at 6 or 7...guess I should have booked the later flights to have a real dinner first, but after a long day I wanted to get home, and taking one earlier would mean paying twice a much....
So, twice I've ended up at Ayara, which is open through the afternoon, and both times when I've walked in at three or so they've been enjoying a staff meal that looked wonderful! There was a roast chicken, several stews that didn't appear to be anything on the menu, plates of watermelon and mango, noodles, seafood. It all looked delicious and definitely a step above their regular offerings...a staff member always cheerfully jumped up to serve me, though I did feel a bit guilty in taking them from that feast...I am very tempted next time to just ask if I can join them! :-)
BTW, I did try the mango and sticky rice on my last visit at the server's urging: the sticky rice was a bit too sticky I thought, but the mango was delicious; they got a very good batch.
Anyway, I am likely to be in this situation again soon, and could use some other suggestions of places that will serve mid to late afternoon. Anywhere between UCLA and the airport would probably work, but would prefer south of the 10. Would be nice if I could get a beer or drink (I rejected Thai Boom for this type of choice this last visit because I really needed/wanted a beer). I noticed that the Truxton Bistro was open; what do Hounds recommend there?
Sure wish I could find a sushi place, but most seem to close mid-afternoon. Any other suggestions? Thanks for any suggestions...
