One word-- wow. Just another reason i love this site so much as i would most likely have found this treasure on my own.
First up We had the ground meat(chicken) with mint and onions and the fried watercress salad. both were terrific. I think i liked the watercress a little bit better but not by much. I really wasnt sure what to expect with the watercress being fried but i went with the unanimous rec from everyone who goes there. It really was terrific and hit all of the right flavour components and textural contrasts. The watercress appears to be dusted with a peanut flour and had a wonderful crispyness and nutty flavour. It went perfect with the chewy squid chunks in the dish. It was hot but not too hot where you couldnt taste the individual components of the salad. All in all a fantastic dish and a must order when i go back.
The ground meat appetizer had similar ingredients to it like mint and cilantro but had a nice refreshing bite to it, perfect on a warm evening.
Not realizing how big the apps would be we also ordered two main courses.
First was the catfish another highly reccomended dish. This was excellent. Redolent of aromatic thai basil and chilles this dish made me wonder why i was eating that american thai slop all of these years.
The other dish we ordered was the jungle curry with pork. Very nice buildup of spice from the other dishes. Once again a tremendous rendition of a sweet and spicy thai curry. Better than ive had elsewhere.
Definitely too much food, next time i think one app will do or i'll just go with more people to try as much as possible. We ordered everything thai spicy and while it was hot it was nowhere near overpowering it made everything alot better. I was expecting alot worse in the heat dept from previous posters but i guess either i have a high heat threshhold(the spiciest dish for me is the ox tongue and tripe in hot oil at grand szechuan that actually made my lips vibrate from the heat) or they didnt really do it thai spicy for us.
Next time i might bring wine, we purchased some Tiger beer at the bodega down the block. Also we sat inside oblivious to the fact that there was a back garden which i defintely want to hit up next time.
Thank again Chowhounders for this terrific find.
I cant wait to go back, and at only 10 minutes from grand central via the 7 express i see no reason not to.
