Wednesday's breakfast was indoors at Cheeky's in Palm Springs, marking week #426. This was my second time, visiting before in 2012 during week #198.
My friend's restaurant was wildly popular then, and now doubled in age, its reputation has grown even more. The crush of people waiting when the doors open is the stuff of legends. I'd bet that in these eight years, more has been written about Cheeky's on a national and international basis than any other restaurant in town. There was a photo shoot in progress during the hectic breakfast service. So what can I say about Cheeky's that hasn't been covered extensively already?
Just this . . . Squash Blossom Enchiladas.
My week the very thin corn tortillas were rolled around a blend of sauteed mushrooms, then napped with a spicy jack cheese and tomatillo cream sauce that had a good kick to it. Tiny, uncooked, dewy fresh squash blossoms top the crepes along with some red onion, cilantro and hot sauce. Very rich and satisfying, three to an order ($12) was more than I could eat at a sitting. I'm told that the filling and sauce will change from week to week, and that these are a seasonal specialty.
If you miss squash blossom season, my dining companion (Tara's mama) favors the chilaquiles ($10) and the waffle ($6) that are always on the ever-changing menu. The tomatillo-based green sauce was so fresh and zesty and I loved the housemade chorizo that peppered the chilaquiles. Though not crispy, the waffle had wonderful eggy flavor and depth. It's served with salted butter and real maple syrup is on every table.
To drink, I really enjoyed the Fizzy ice tea, served from a tap blended with lemon and agave syrup. So refreshing and taste-tingling.
Not only was this a terrific meal to start the day, I found it highly gratifying to witness the demand for locally sourced food. The night before, another restaurateur had high praise and appreciation for the role that Cheeky's played in paving the way and building the small farm networks for like-minded restaurant owners to open in Palm Springs.
