Sprinkles opened on Monday and I stopped in this morning for a few cupcakes. I've been to the store in Beverly Hills and have had mixed thoughts: the first time I was disappointed, while I enjoyed the cupcakes (particularly the coconut) on my second visit. I'm beginning to think that my last review was positive since it came on the tail end of a Leda's-Yummy's-Sprinkles crawl and I definitely didn't care for the first two on that list. I know many like Leda's, but that style is just not for me: I find the neoclassical buttercream too buttery and not sweet enough.
Today I picked up coconut, vanilla and banana since I don't care for the red velvet or chocolate varieties. Now I realize that that the best thing going on at Sprinkles is the cream cheese frosting. The vanilla (vanilla cake, vanilla frosting) was plain, dry and boring. The coconut (vanilla cake, cream cheese frosting, shredded coconut) had a nice mix of coconut flavor from the shreds and the cream cheese. Banana (banana cake, cream cheese frosting) was moister than the other flavors I've tried with a nice strong banana flavor and, being topped with the cream cheese frosting, helped it stand out.
I don't think I'll be running down to Sprinkles very often, though. Overall, I think the cupcakes are just too dense and dry compared to what you can make at home.
