Spring Hill Organic Lavender Ice Cream

Melanie Wong | Jul 16, 2006 01:56 AM

This afternoon I stopped at the Saturday farmers market in Petaluma. A sign on the Spring Hill Farms booth, "Organic lavender ice cream, $1.50), got my attention quickly. This is the price for a prepacked cup of about 3 ounces by volume.

The degree of lavender is so well done. It's not one of my favorite flavors and I often find it too aggressive or coarse. But this is just enough to identify the herb and not overwhelm the taste of the sweet cream base. The ice cream was rock hard, and I ate it too fast to let it warm up. I'm sure it would have been better a bit softer and not so stiff. It had a pretty clean finish, and if there are any added emulsifiers, it's not much.

Chocolate flavor is also available. I asked if the ice cream is sold at the other farmers market. The employee wasn't sure, but did advise that it can be purchased at the farm.
