Special butter at Amandine Patisserie

Nice flaky pastries at Amandine on Wilshire in West L.A., but--to us, at least--they don't smell or taste of butter, which is disappointing. The owner says they use only butter, but that it's a "special" butter, the secret of which can't be revealed. Any ideas? (I don't doubt what he says; just wondering how one can use only butter and yet come out with a result that doesn't smell or taste like butter.)
