after countless recs from friends, Time Out, etc. my brunch in the Yaffa Café garden was big whopping disappointment. I mean the place on St Marks between 1st and A. Somehow I managed to choose one of the few options not drenched in hollandaise sauce, but I guess the chef didn’t want me to be left out of the party, he gave me a big douse of it anyway. I told our waiter I wanted it cream sauce-free, like it said on the menu – his answer was ZAT VILL BE PROBLEM. but I wouldn’t let him put it down on our table, and eventually he returned with breakfast sans hollandaise.
I give at least a few kudos to the menu designer, there were some options that sounded nicely thought out, but sadly they were haphazardly prepared, and with run of the mill ingredients. I always appreciate having greens on a brunch menu, but these weren’t a good salad like you get at Jane...of course you aren’re paying for that at Yaffa. more apples to apples, they weren’t the nice veggies you get at Alice's Tea Cup for a cheap price.
our touchy waiter charged us for my breakfast twice, and when we asked the guy at the cash register to fix our bill – figuring he had to be a bigger help – it took them eons. I was with a friend who’s a Yaffa-aficionado, and even he had to admit his disgust. the staff was much nicer at Moomba back in the day – pretty amazing the Yaffa people were able to make a garden feel like a fast food joint in Penn Station…never again !
