I'm about 6 months into living life with a soy allergy (which rules out soy sauce of course, but also-- the bigger hassle in restaurants, Soybean oil!) and I am seriously missing good ethnic food-- particularly Indian, Ethiopian, and Thai. I've given up obviously on japanese-chinese.
I THOUGHT a lot of those ethnic restaurants would be fine, with curries, etc... but NO. What put me over the edge was trying an Indian restaurant on the fly, and upon seating, asked the server about soybean oil... he looked at me, shook his head, and said basically-- no dice... you might as well leave. EVERYTHING had soybean oil in it-- even the basmati rice!
So any help out there? Certainly somebody else has faced this or might know behind the scenes of some places that use better oils than soybean oil? WHat makes it worse too sometimes, is I'll call, ask what oils they use and they'll tell me "vegetable oil."
I have found that the easiest places for me to eat are higher end (once that dont mind paying more for better oils than soybean blends, or else chain-style places (which I used to avoid like crazy) because they are more corporate and document allergens well.
As I said, I am specifically interested in Indian, Thai and ethiopian options from Seattle to Tacoma to even Olympia if I gotta. *Bonus points to anyone who knows an indian place that does Gobi Manchurian in non-soy oil (my son's favorite app).
