So, I stopped by South Shore BBQ this evening to get some 'Q from the legendary Willie B.

Having never been there, I had no idea what to expect from the joint itself. I knew that I would be in good hands food wise, but I was pleasantly surprised by the building's aesthetics. It had a clean but rustic feel to it. A deep burgundy exterior led to wood accented interior. Wooden chairs and tables are arrayed as you walk into the dining area that is roomy, with about 12 4 tops.

A short wall separates the dining area from a large bar. The bar also has tables for eating as well as a large bar top for drinking and snacking.

There is a separate area for ordering take out and picking up orders that has a huge menu on the wall and a bench for people waiting on their food.

I tried the sausage (made in-house), ribs, chicken wings, pulled pork and brisket. Yes, it was a lot of food.

The pulled pork was excellent. The fact that I got a decent amount of bark didn't hurt. It was unsauced and redolent with smoke. I think (but I'm not sure) that the wings were smoked as well. They had a nice kick to them and were of generous size. The ribs were a standard KC style but were meatier than I expected. They were at least 3.5 and up. A little sweet and very tender. The brisket had a beautiful smoke ring, and like the pork, had a strong smoke flavor. The sausage had a nice kick to it and was smooth, but a little dry. There was no clumping of fat that you sometimes find in small batch sausage. Very flavorful.

It's great to have Willie back on the commercial scene again. If you are in the area, stop by and check it out.
