South Food & Wine Bar Report

We had dinner Saturday night at South Food & Wine Bar in SoMA. Luckily we had an earlyish res since with the super windy weekend, South (and a bunch of others in that neck of the woods) lost power for about an hour. No matter - the wine was good -- but accounted for a good chunk of our check as we opted to go by the glass. Had we not had the extra hour there, the damage wouldn't have been so bad.The Chalice Bridge Semillon Chardonnay may have been the highlight of the wine selections we tried.

The restaurant itself is much smaller than even I would have thought so it's quick to fill up on a Saturday night. The spring pea soup with creme fraiche and mint made me long for the mushy peas I had alongside a meat pie at Lord Nelson's Pub in Sydney. And the lamb was excellent. Cooked mediium rare, it wasn't gamey in the least.

The pavlova with strawberry, kiwi was fine, but the passion fruit sauce/glaze was overwhelmingly sour. And I have to say that despite having some really terrific coffee in Sydney earlier this year, the flat white was the flat note of the evening.

I know going local even with water is the eco-thing to do, but I have to give bonus points for serving Antipodes sparkling water -- a nice detail.

Would I have been interested had I not just spent vacation in Australia? I sort of doubt it. But it's a good spot near CalTrain and we'll probably be back some weekend or other to try the brunch menu.
