South 'burbs/NW Indiana?

I grew up in Thornton, and get back there a few times a year to visit. Most of the media and other dining references act as if there is no intelligent life south of the Museum of Science and Industry, so I thought perhaps I could get some up-to-date recommendations here for the South Suburbs and the "Calumet Region".

I'm open to all types of restaurants, whether it's old favorites, undiscovered local gems, hot new places to try, or anything else you might want to suggest. I'm willing to drive a bit (outer limits might be something like west to Lockport, east to Merrillville, south to Kankakee, north to the South Side of Chicago) but consider distance from Thornton as your starting point - the closer to "ground zero" the more likely it is we'll be able to make the place a regular haunt.

All cuisines and price ranges are welcome. Mom is not an adventurous diner, so I need good "mainstream" options, but if anybody has found Vietnamese, Korean, Jamaican, or good Indian, I'd be particularly impressed. Those will be for nights when I'm on my own!

And yes, I do search the archives, but it never hurts to try to stir up additional responses.

Lastly, if by chance the combination of my hometown and nickname sounds familiar, decode my email address above (one hopes to limit spam) and get back in touch!
