Soul Flavors, Jersey City New Jersey

In Jersey City for daughter's birthday, we ask where she wants to go. She says a previous lunch at Soul Flavors was really good, lets go there. Music to these ears :)

Soul Flavors is a small (8 tables) restaurant with simple but attractive decor. There are many choices on the menu which specializes in soul food with a mix of Carribean influence.
There are several items marked with asterisks which indicate 25 minute preparation. Everything made to order, its a place to kick back relax and enjoy the evening.
The four of us sampled a lot of food and had a mini feast. Started with an order of salmon cakes with a remoulade sauce, Cuban chicken brochettes served with roasted garlic aioli and red pepper coulis, homemade corn bread and homemade biscuits. The salmon cakes and chicken brochettes were very good, spiced and full of flavor without heat. Biscuits were also tasty with a tender texture. Plain butter was served with the biscuits and cornbread. The cornbread was good but a bit dry and lacking some flavor.

Entrees were all winners. A special of red grouper over a seafood hash which contained shrimp, scallops and rice brought together with a delicious spice blend. This was excellent. My buttermilk fried chicken, 5 meaty pieces with a light flaky but crisp crust. was tasty and a big portion. Smothered chicken was the same fried chicken with a rich chicken and carmelized onion gravy. Received a big thumbs up.
Jumbo shrimp were garnished with peppers, onions and tomatoes served in a coconut curry sauce. This had wonderful flavor.
Sides were Aunt Dot's mac and cheese, good flavor, "wet" style, coconut scented rice and black eyed peas, very good, braised collard greens with smoked turkey, just fair, ginger carrot and cabbage slaw, excellent.
Lots of food leftover for DD and boyfriend to enjoy today.

There is a nice list of desserts, we sampled Ms. Vicky's bourbon glazed bread pudding. Bread pudding is a favorite of mine and we all agreed this version was one of the best we have had lately.
Soul Flavors is BYO and we celebrated with a Leitz riesling and Holdredge pinot.

Soul Flavors is a great place to sample some satisfying food in a relaxed setting. If you have not been to JC lately, it is one vibrant restaurant and bar town. So different than just a few years ago. Here is some additional info on Soul Flavors. I will cross post on the Tristate board.
