Over the past couple of months I have made almost weekly visits to SONO Asian Cuisine in Arlington. I liked SONO when it first opened and I have to say that I like it even more now. Tom, the manager, and his young team are doing a great job serving really excellent Japanese food. I stick pretty much to the sashimi and sushi offerings, especially any of the specialty items they usually have on Thurs, Fri. and Sat. This past Thursday they had Jack Mackerel (Aji) directly from Japan. I ordered it just as sashimi but because it is the whole fish they will serve it as half sashimi and half as nigiri sushi. The presentation, the freshness and traditional garnish of grated ginger and finely chopped chives was outstanding. I followed this with locally sourced flounder (Hirame). This was served with a very nice dipping sauce that Tom told me was a combination of rice vinegar, salted plum paste (Ume boshi) and a few drops Sriacha. The slightly spicy sauce was an excellent match for the Hirame. I also tried the Uni with a raw quail egg yoke that was so delicious I had a second order. I ended my last visit with a Natto Temaki which was a fitting end to a very nice meal.
I also think that SONO does the best version of Hamachi Kama I have ever had in Boston. Each time I have ordered it the portion has been enough for two people if you combined it with some other dishes and at $11.00 it is a bargain. I have also grown to like their Age Dashi Tofu which is much better than the first time I tried it shortly after they opened.
As a long time fan of Sushi Island (prior to their move to Marblehead) and Toraya I now prefer SONO over both of them. In addition to great very traditional Japanese food the friendly yet professional team make a visit to SONO very enjoyable.
