I'm having a problem with my dishwasher - or dishes - or something else - and I need all the help I can get.
I run my dishwasher every day. About once every 20 cycles or so, the dishes smell terrible. It's hard to describe the smell, somewhat like rotten eggs, dirty water, etc. The smell permeates all my stoneware, glasses, utensils. Plastic is not affected by this terrible smell. I've searched up-and-down the internet, and this problem is reported over-and-over, but I can't find anyone who has resolved it. I've had a plumber check to make sure dishwasher is installed correctly. I've had an appliance person check the dishwasher, and it's working correctly. Water is OK in other parts of house. I've run the special dishwasher cleaning tablets. I've made sure garage disposal is clean - and empty when we do dishes. I've switched dishwashing detergents at least 3 times, in attempt to make this go away.
In searching for cause of problem, I've come upon some posts by people who have a similar problem when washing dishes by hand - bad smell, doesn't effect plastics, etc. This has me even more puzzled about the cause of this random event.
Does anyone have any thoughts? There was another post here on Chowhound (from Beachchick) about the same issue, but she seems to have dropped out of the conversation. Beachchick, I'd love to hear from you!
Any help would be appreciated!
