Annual event in Solvang - pay a ticket price and walk around town to various restaurants and venues and try small samples of local specialties. Nothing really special to be found, but a chance to compare and contrast some of the Solvang basics for a filling and satisfying local event:
Best danish pastries with raspberry filling that tasted like raspberry, and not some red chemical glop found elsewhere: - the winner is Birkholm's Bakery on Alisal Road, and we tried them all.
Best danish sausages go to Viking Garden Restaurant tied with Paula's Pancakes. Nice selection of mustards at both places.
Best of show was Fresco Valley Cafe for the very non-Danish but excellent, fresh baugette crostini with balsamic drizzle. Fresco's holds its own, no matter where they show up.
Best deal: Full cup of coffee at Bulldog and full cup of Carlsburg's beer at Greenhouse Cafe
Best surprise was the Easter Punch - cool and fruity at Jule Hus
Enough to sample and feed you for a meal - very small portions at each stop, but they quickly added up. Main fun was getting re-oriented with this charming little Danish town and exploring more of its nooks and crannies and finding something new.
Always clean restrooms handy along with plenty of trash containers along the way. Stop by the best shoe store in SoCal on Copenhagen Drive at First Street before you start, so your feet can enjoy it as much as your tastebuds.
We are not talking gourmet here, nor did the higher-end restaurants participate. So it would be nice if next year they did to show the fuller range of Solvang offerings - hear that Root 246, Mirabelle, Cecco, Hadsten, and Succulent Cafe - where were you?
Friday was a dessert and jazz extravaganza and tomorrow Sunday is Wine and Beer Walk. They have a weekend ticket for everything, or you can purchase each event separately.
