Snails at D&A Cafe (Oakland Chinatown--7th&Webster)?

zippo | Mar 19, 2005 07:06 PM

Yesterday I made an excuse to be in Oakland Chinatown at about 3:30 pm in order to check out various Happy Hour specials talked about on this board. The Yo Ho dim sum on Eighth (a little east of Webster) was empty of patrons as was the next door dim sum restaurant.

Over at D&A Cafe (7th and Webster) all the seats were full for the 3-6 pm Happy Hour. I had the Won Ton Soup with Fun noodle and the fried squid for $2 each. The quality was acceptable, considering, and it was a change from my usual curry chicken or baked tofu sandwiches from Cam Houng (near 10th on Webster) for about $2.25 each.

I noticed that several other diners each had a bowl of snails in the shell sitting in a reddish-brown sauce. I didn't see snails on the $2 menu and, unfortunately, I didn't ask anyone about the price or quality of the snail dish.

Has anyone tried the snails at D&A? My guess is that they are only about $4 or so. Frankly, I have never had snails, but if they are only $4, I have no excuse for not trying them.
