Smitty's in Pasadena - Disappointing

Suvro | Oct 24, 2003 01:50 PM

Last Monday we had lunch at Smitty's. Compared to my previous visit (a while back) this was utterly disappointing. Our party had 4.

We ordered shrimp cocktail after the waittress said there would be 5 pieces. It came with 4 medium sized shrimp and a none-too-distinctive cocktail sauce. At $9.25 it was a terrible value.

We had also ordered the battered fried onion rings - which were OK.

I had their blackened catfish even though Smitty's is better known for their steaks and meat dishes - at least the selection is much larger. It was undistinguishable from one that might be served in strip mall places (such as at the intersection of Mountain and Lake, a little further north). It came on a bed of limp garlic sauteed beans. One other person had ordered one of the specials - orange roughy with a tomato-mango coulis - and it looked extremely ordinary. Only the lamb chops were worth the money - according to the third person who had it.

They claimed to have Fosselman's ice cream - but very limited flavors (vanilla, cherry vanilla and one other) - none of the distinctive Fosselman's creations like chocolate-raspberry-mousse!

The quality was definitely down from my earlier experience. Has anyone been there recently and can offer an opinion? (And they are looking to expand in LA area)
