I have come across so many comments about the noxious smell of durian fruit. It seems like every time the topic is broached, folk come out of the woodwork to talk about how they were kicked out of a hotel for bringing one in, grossed out by the stench of one being enjoyed a half a mile away, etc. etc. etc.
However, I have yet to come across one in New York City that gives off more than a rather mild, sweetish smell - even when my nose is buried in one of them. What gives? Are our durians descented somehow? Is there more than one variety of durian fruit?
