Walter B. "Pete" Jones, 77, owner-operator of the Skylight Inn BBQ restaurant in Ayden, NC died Wednesday, Feb. 15 at his home following a battle with cancer. He had been active in the business he started in 1947 until retiring in 2004 following a heart attack.
Jones and his eastern NC barbeque were featured in National Geographic, Southern Living, People, and GQ magazines. He also was the winner of the James Beard Culinary Award, a prize most often won by chefs who work with more exotic foods than pork bbq. His funeral will be held on Saturday in Ayden.
