Skip 'Renato et Luisa' in Rome

Friends who live in Rome raved about this undiscovered old-fashioned restaurant in the heart of the city, so we decided to give it a chance and had one of the worst meals we've ever had in Italy. The evening was a disaster from soup to nuts, too, with the rudest and most off-handed service we've ever experienced in Italy. And now the food--cacio e pepe with zucchini flowers (the latter being a poor addition to this classic Roman dish) where instead of melting into the pasta the way that it does at Felice a Testaccio, the cheese became big gummy lumps, probably because it was cheap industrial cheese rather than really good Pecorino. Next, a ghastly dried out beef braised in wine with no garnish of any kind, and involtini di melazane that were like cocktail canapes, and bad ones at that. Speaking Italian reasonably well, we had to prompt the waitress to recite the daily specials, plead with her for salt, remind her that we'd ordered espressos fifteen minutes earlier, and finally almost mud-wrestle her to get il conto and get the hell out of there. This is a truly disastrous restaurant, so avoid like the plague and go to Roscioli or La Campana instead if your in the heart of historic Rome.
